ASIFA-Hollywood at San Diego Comic Con
ASIFA-Hollywood is accelerating our participation at San Diego Comic Con this year, we are producing four panels and boosting our booth activities too.
THAT AGAIN? AVOIDING REPETITION IN ANIMATED FEATURES – MODERATED BY CHARLES SOLOMON
In recent years, animated features have enjoyed an enormous financial success: The three top-grossing animated films of 2013 accounted for 10% of the total US box office. Despite this unprecedented success, critics and filmmakers have complained of a sameness creeping into the design and story of many films. Charles Solomon, an internationally respected critic and author of sixteen books on the subject, will lead the discussion about the state of the animated feature and its future as both a medium of artistic expression and a financially viable form of filmmaking. David Silverman (Director, The Pink Panther), Doug Sweetland (Director, Storks) and Morishima Taro (Associate Producer, Paprika) will join the discussion. Thursday, 7/24/14, 3:30p.m. – 4:30p.m., Room: 26AB
ASIFA-HOLLYWOOD PRESENTS ANIMATION IN VIDEO GAMES
What does it take to animate a video game? How does animation in video games differ from conventional animated media and where does it overlap? ASIFA-Hollywood invites you to join the panel for a lively discussion on the wide array of disciplines and possibilities in video game animation, which will include artists who have experience in CG key frame, motion capture, sprites, hand-drawn and dynamic animation. This is a panel aspiring game animators don’t want to miss! Thursday, 7/24/14, 4:00pm – 5:00pm, Room 5AB
ASIFA-HOLLYWOOD PRESENTS: THE STATE OF THE ANIMATION INDUSTRY

Join panelists Miguel Jiron (Despicable Me 2), Raul Garcia (Melon Digital S.L.), Brooke Keesling (Cartoon Network), Steve Hulett (The Animation Guild), Danny Young (Blurr Studios), and moderated by Tom Sito (Beauty and the Beast, Shrek). From motion picture production to creating animated shorts for the internet, the panel will discuss the industry across all disciplines as it is today, and how animators find and create jobs. The panel will include professionals from major and independent studios, gaming, and commercial production. Friday, 7/25/14, 5:00p.m. – 6:00p.m., Room: 4
WORST CARTOONS EVER! – MODERATED BY JERRY BECK
For the 10th year, Jerry Beck (Cartoon Research) will once again compile a new selection of the most terribly written, ugliest drawn and unintentionally funniest animated films ever made. Cartoons include Mighty Mr. Titan (a physical fitness superhero) and Super President (a one-man weapon of mass destruction)! Be sure to enjoy some of the worst there is out there in this hilarious salute. Friday, 7/25/14 from 8:15 PM – 9:15 PM, Room 6BCF
If you cannot attend San Diego Comic Con, we will be taping many of our panels and will be available on our website and YouTube channel soon after the the event is over.
Also featured at this year’s San Diego Comic Con is our ASIFA booth. Located in our historical spot on the exhibition floor, space 1534, the booth will be set up to inform any and all about ASIFA-Hollywood, sign up new members and just provide a place where folks can stop by and chill for a few minutes. As an added bonus this year, individuals who enroll or update their membership at San Diego Comic Con will receive a actual production cel (you remember cels, don’t you?) from the 80’s television series Ewoks!
We are looking forward to seeing you at the Con!
